This is the page to view for:

  • New plant material.  We're always collecting new material, much of it "unusual", in the sense that it's been hard to find elsewhere.  Should we have any extra plants for sale, we'll tell you about them here.
  • The rare and unusual.  Plants aren't just a business for us, it's a fun hobby too.  We'll grow almost anything that catches our eye and that we can successfully get to grow for us.  We also do a lot of traveling, either across the country or across the world, and have friends and sources everywhere.  Sometimes we'll have a few extra to offer.
  • Plants not listed on catalog.  We can't list everything in our catalog--there's just too much!  This doesn't mean that it's not worthy--sometimes we just didn't have enough in stock when the catalog went to press (or we simply forgot to include it).
  • Some personal favorites.  Sometimes there are plants that we love that others just don't seem to appreciate.  Some of the very best plants are often some of the least in demand.
  • Great plants at bargain prices!  Often, we just have too many plants of a particular variety.  You can save some money, and we can gain some extra growing space.

SINNINGIA 'PERIDOT'S DARTH VADER'

We grow a handful of Sinningia, and this is one of our favorites.  'Peridot's Darth Vader' (shown at left), was acquired a few years ago at a National convention of The Gesneriad Society, where it won Best in Show.  It's a spectacular plant, with very large blooms that need to be seen to be believed--very dark purple with a white throat, spotted dark purple.  The plant grows 10-12" in diameter when mature.  We've grown ours successfully both in windows (east or west) and under artificial lights.

'Like all sinningia, this is a tuberous plants, so don't discard them if you think you've "killed" it.  Once a tuber has formed, it will later resprout, grow, and bloom.  Care is otherwise same as for African violets.

SINNINGIA 'BEWITCHED'

A long-time favorite of ours.  We've been growing this one for nearly 15 years, and most of the time it's been in bloom or bud.  It's not really a large grower, but it will spread with age, as the tuber grows--the tuber on our "stock plant" is now more than 10" in diameter (and still growing).

A different variety, with bright crimson-red edging and spots on creamy tubular flowers.  A medium size grower that won't need more than a 4" pot.  We grow ours set back from a west-facing window.

STREPTOCARPUS SAXORUM VARIEGATED

We received a cutting from this plant last year and have been successful in propagating and growing it.  It is a very rare and unusual variegated form of S. saxorum, a plant that many may already be familiar with (our thanks to Bill Price).

Like S.saxorum, it will produce small, light, lilac-blue blooms, though this the variegated version is a slower grower and not as free a bloomer.  Instead, grow it for its beautiful foliage.  It is not a difficult plant, getting the same care as the rest of our collection, but it also won't tolerate prolonged periods of neglect.

We are lucky to be among a small handful of growers that have this plant, and even fewer who have propagated it for sale--it is VERY rare and VERY beautiful, a must for the true collector.

NAUTILOCALYX 'GOTEBURG'

An upright grower that will readily branch when pinched (which we recommend), making for a fuller plant (and more blooms).  It has soft, furry, green leaves, covered in fine red hairs.  Light lavender blooms are easily and regularly produced.  We grow ours both under lights and set-back from a west-facing window.  Care is otherwise the same for African violets.

In many ways, similar to an episcia, but more upright in growth habit.  A very easy to grow gesneriad.

NAUTILOCALYX ADENOSIPHON

We acquired this species because it had white blooms, very unusual for nautilocalyx.  It has turned out to be a very easy to grow plant, quickly growing into a full basket from the cuttings we first acquired.

Small, thumb-sized, very soft and fuzzy leaves easily branch to make a nice, spreading shrub or basket plant.  Never a heavy bloomer, but a regular bloomer that always seems to have a handful of blooms--and in white!  Care similar to violets or other gesneriads--we've grown ours both on windowsills and hanging in our glasshouse, often subjected to long periods of neglect without consequence.  A collectible plant the the novice could easily master.

CEROPEGIA

The full botanical name is a bit longer, Ceropegia linearis subsp. Woodii Huber 'variegata'.  You can call it by its more common name, variegated 'love vine', or 'string of hearts'.  This is an unusual variety because of its heavy white variegation.  We've yet to see it commercially sold in this country.  Varieties usually seen have pink or grayish variegation.

This plant came to our collection 10 years ago with Olive from Taiwan, where she originally acquired it from another Taiwanese grower, who had gotten it from Japan.  It is a very easy to grow plant, being semi-succulent, and develops a tuber, which means that it requires little water and is fairly tolerant of neglect.  It tolerates brighter light than do violets, and prefers warm, but not hot, temperatures.  That said, it does quite well in our glasshouse during the cool winter.  We also grow it hanging in the entranceway to our shop and under lights.

Vines can grow virtually indefinitely.  Ours extends about 8 feet from the basket to the floor.  They'll flower spring through summer, though the purplish blooms are weird looking and not especially attractive.  In any event, it's definitely a conversation piece.
